Why is Nature important to us? Why does coral reefs in specific matter to investors? - It’s a question of $2.7 trillion annually.Cited from https://lnkd.in/gJjRrvUJ, NOAA’s latest Coral Reef report presenting what is expected to be the most extensive coral reefs bleaching on record. Coral reefs are vital, not just being the ecosystem nurturing marine life, but also provide protein for millions of people and protect coasts from storms. Michael Marks and I attended Ecosperity 2024 in Singapore last week. This year’s key theme is renewing our vibrant Spring. It is heartening to see the growing interests from investors in addressing Nature, a capital yet to be priced properly in our economy. The science case cannot be more compelling. The business case to integrate nature-positivity needs to be scaled up rapidly with collective efforts. Simply, we cannot neglect nature whilst tackling climate.Sharing my photos documenting bleaching and stressed coral reefs I witnessed from last year’s diving trips to Raja Ampat and Lembeh, Indonesia, where are situated in the famous coral triangle supposed to be sancturies of our marine life.

Coral bleaching has been discussed among the scientific world when I was studying as an environmental scientist. The sad reality is that we let it happen despite the predictions, partly because the change feels remote to our day to day. Good that your photos are bringing more attention and awareness to this topic.

I am always awed by the vastness of species that are underwater. So much more that we don't know yet. Why and how-come do these often weird and outworldish looking critters exist in this immense world?! Do they exist for the purpose to be found by divers like myself to take a photo? Over the Easter long weekend, I did a quick diving trip to the Philippines. It was such a joyful kindergarten playground with juvenile animals, often only at the size of a sand grain! One of my favourites, the “Shaun the Sheep” Nudibranch, captured in the 2nd photo, is much more than just a cute little creature, but in fact these microscopic beings can be classed as a “solar powered nudi”. They are found on shallow parts of the reef, crawling along leaves, sea grass or algae and consuming the foliage to harness the chloroplasts into their tiny bodies, enabling them to photosynthesize! While we have seen fast growing attention from investors about nature, often I am asked about the difference between 'nature' and 'biodiversity. Nature and biodiversity, while often used interchangeably, are distinct concepts. - Nature covers the entirety of the natural world. It refers to the combination of the non-living (such as the weather, sea, and mountains) and living aspects (organisms, such as animals (such as the critters!), plants, fungi etc.) of the natural world. Nature encompasses the variability of living organisms.- Biodiversity refers to the variability of living organisms across nature’s four realms (land, ocean, freshwater and atmosphere). If it is the characteristic of 'Nature' to enable ecosystems to be productive, resilient and able to adapt, then 'Biodiversity' can be seen as the representation of the health of ecosystems. published our first Nature Framework https://lnkd.in/dtqmPtVk. The document outlines why nature is important to investors, our investment stewardship approach, key considerations and the 4 nature sub-themes that we are focusing on. Being 1/4 Korean, Korea has a special place in my heart. This week, together with a group of of investors, I joined the Korean delegation trip organised by the Asian Corporate Governance Association (ACGA). We had an agenda full of fruitful discussions with representatives from ministries, regulators, industrial associations, NGOs, asset owners, and academics centering shareholder values and corproate governance. It is heartening to hear the key stakeholders recognising the important role of #corproategovernance to drive reform in the Korean capital market. Shareholder returns, general shareholder value protections, market accessibility to international investors, corproate governance best practices etc. were some of the topics we discused sharing investors’ expectations as the market transformation. These are well related to the topic of the month - Korea’s Corproate Value-up Program. Albeit further guidance is to be issued in May, from the level of participations we had across the key players this week, my personal perception is of ‘a glass half full’ situation here. Investors also took the opportunity to attended several #AGM and met with companies in the peak 2-weeks of Korean AGM season. At , we consider the importance of engaging with relevant stakeholders across the policy making, Corproate and broader market ecosystem, where we as a major institutional investor have influence.A heartful thanks to Jamie Allen Amar Gill Stephanie Lin, KWG’s co-hosts Yoo-Kyung (YK) Park Su Sang Yoon and the dedicated team of Asian Corporate Governance Association (ACGA) for this well organised and insightful delegation trip.

We published our inaugurated Human Rights policy last December summarising why human rights matter to investors and ’s expectations for our investee companies. This recent blog further outlines how we're engaging with investee companies on human rights issues. We expect companies to elevate human rights to boardroom agenda as human rights is no longer a risk, but also a matter of compliance, license to operation, and financial material. Furthermore, we encourage companies to initiate dialogues with investors, starting from disclosures as we stated in the set expectations.#investmentstewardship #responsibleinvestment https://lnkd.in/gG4jJsgk

"It's not just about throwing money at the issue - it has to be holistic" as my colleague, Angeli Benham said in commenting our expectations on the important agenda of living wage - we have been asking companies to create a strategy around living wage across their supply chain, but also to offer employees upskilling and financial training.https://lnkd.in/gD69F8gP

Today marks the beginning of my 2nd year with . One of the reasons I chose to join LGIM's Investment Stewardship team in 2023 was to leverage my almost two decades of experiences in the field of #sustainability #esg in a financial institution that genuinely embeds responsible investment in what they do, willing to mobilising finance in driving positive changes towards a better world. Reflecting last year's journey, I am pleased to say, that my objective was well met. Working closely with our global investment stewardship colleagues, we started to adopt a localised approach in gaining deeper insights of Asian market considerations for active ownership in deploying LGIM Investment Stewardship Team's global strategy. We also seized material opportunities in areas where we can move the needles with our scale & influence on a number of prioritised themes. Not only did we ramp up our engagement coverage with companies in the region, both in quantity and quality, we also participated in various engagements with regulators to demonstrate LGIM's leadership in the field. We further expanded our partnerships with a growing number of collaboration partners around prioritised themes and in various jurisdictions. Looking forward into 2024, we will continue to extend and upscale our investment stewardship activities in the region. During the last year, I had the priviledge to witness and participate in the establishment and fast growth of our Singapore office as part of the Asia Growh Initiative! On a personal note, I am very grateful for how Michael Marks & Natasha Mora welcomed me to the team, for the joy and satisfaction of working alongside my amazing colleagues in the investment stewardship team, at LGIM Asia and to all other teams for making me feel truly included and rewarded!#LGIMASIA #investmentstewardship #responsibleinvestment Celebrating my work anniversary. Feeling thankful for this #workmilestone
