Chocolate Hazelnut Chess Pie with Rolos

When I was contacted about trying a sample of Nocciolata, a hazelnut spread with cocoa and milk, I couldn’t wait! It’s organic, uses ingredients such as dark chocolate from the Antillean Islands, Italian hazelnuts, brown sugar, skim milk and Bourbon vanilla extract. Delicious! It’s also gluten-free, kosher and has no palm oil, hydrogenated fat, artificial flavors or artificial colors.

Isn’t it great that since Nocciolata is organic and uses skim milk it makes this pie healthy?

Ha! Wouldn’t that be nice? 😉

Nocciolata vs. Nutella

I was really excited to bake with it, but it was so hard deciding what to make. This stuff is so good, all I really need is a spoon. So I wanted to make sure that whatever I made, the flavor of the spread was what really came through. The Nocciolata has a stronger hazelnut flavor to it than Nutella (a similar product), which I think is more chocolatey. So if you prefer a nuttier taste, Nocciolata is the spread for you!

I’ve been dying to try chess pie. I had never even heard of it until recently. Now it’s popping up in a number of places with all kinds of fun variations. I’ve yet to see a Chocolate Hazelnut one though, so I figured your favorite sugar addict would be the girl for the job!

What Is Chess Pie?

Now you may still be wondering what in the world chess pie is. I hear you.

I’ve read a few variations on the origin. Basically, it’s a traditional southern pie. Since I’m southern, I figure I should know about it.

The ingredients are very simple – mostly eggs and sugar (giving it it’s wonderful sweetness) with a sprinkling of a few other things. Many variations use a bit of cornmeal. I didn’t have that on hand and I didn’t want to buy a whole bag for one pie, so I used flour instead.

I think my favorite thing about making this pie is that it is so simple, especially if you use a pre-made crust. You don’t even have to blind bake the crust.

How To Make Chocolate Hazelnut Chess Pie

You literally whisk everything together in a bowl, pour it into an unbaked crust and bake it. No need for a mixer or anything!

And to rev it up even more, I added rolos. Because caramel makes everything even better.

You may not be able to tell from the pictures, but there are rolos baked right into the pie. They melted as it baked and blended right it, adding to the sweet serenity that is this pie. If you don’t like things sweet, this is not the pie for you.

The pie bakes up with a nice crust on top of it. I added some whipped cream and chopped rolos, but that part is up to you. However you top it, there’s no doubt in my mind you’ll enjoy it! 🙂

I was provided with a free sample of Nocciolata, but all opinions are my own.
