Ingredients for pumpkin spice lip balm with shea butter and beeswax

Likemany lip balm recipes, my homemade pumpkin spice lip balm is made from a blendof natural waxes and moisturizing plant butters. While you can make a lip balmwith fewer ingredients, the moisturizing and skincare benefits will be boosted byusing a combination of different waxes and oils.

Here arethe materials you need to make a lip balm recipe with natural ingredients:

  • beeswax – Beeswax provides stiffness and body to the homemade lip balm recipe and acts as a humectant.
  • candelilla wax – Candelilla has a higher melting point than beeswax and is an additional ingredient to keep homemade lip balm from melting. For vegan lip balm, skip the beeswax and only use candelilla wax for a vegan lip balm recipe.
  • jojoba oil – Jojoba oil creates a lipid film on the skin and locks moisture, making your lips soft and supple.
  • shea butter, cocoa butter and mango butter – These plant-based butters pamper the skin and are excellent for natural lip care. Lip balm with shea butter, cocoa butter and mango butter is wonderfully moisturising, and your lips will feel softer afterwards.
  • lip balm tubes – We also need a lip balm container. You can either use lip balm tubes or small lip balm pots. The free printable lip balm labels include options for both.

Optional ingredients

The following ingredients are optional but I highly recommend them for the best pumpkin spice lip balm.

  • vitamin E oil – Vitamin E oil nourishes and moisturises the skin, keeping your lips hydrated and supple. As a potent antioxidant, vitamin E oil also fights free radicals and may prevent premature signs of ageing.
  • ground cinnamon – A half teaspoon ground cinnamon enhances the fall fragrances and gives a slight lip plumping effect, almost like a cinnamon lip balm plumper.
  • stevia powder – How to sweeten DIY lip balm? A pinch of stevia powder sweetens the lip balm naturally.

Is beeswax good for lips?

Absolutely! As I mentioned, beeswax is a natural emulsifier and humectant, which means the waxattracts and retains water from the air into the upper layer of the skin. Beeswaxprovides a long-lasting moisturizing effect, which is very helpful for dry lipsand chapped lips.

What essential oils are good for lip balm? – EOs for pumpkin spice lip balm

In my non-greasypumpkin spice body butter recipe, I talk about the skincare benefits ofspice essential oils. I decided to stick to the classic pumpkin pie spices forthis autumn-inspired homemade lip balm with essential oils: cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove, and allspice. This EO blend creates a warm pumpkin spice aroma, and the essential oils are good for lips too.

Here is whatyou need to know about these essential oils for and Eos pumpkin spice lip balm:

What can I use to flavour lip balm?

We just talkedabout how to make pumpkin spice lip balm with essential oils. While essentialoils are great to scent this moisturizing lip balm recipe naturally, the DIYpumpkin spice essential oil blend for lip balm I suggested above isn’t suitablefor pregnancy or small children.

So what elsecan I use to flavour lip balm? To make pumpkin spice lip balm for children and pregnantwomen, another idea is using candy flavoring in lip balm instead of essentialoils. For example, I used strawberry candy oil to give my strawberrylip scrub a fruity strawberry flavour.

LorAnn Bakery Emulsions are great optionsfor autumn lip balm recipes. Use cinnamonspice for DIY cinnamon lip balm, pumpkinspice for pumpkin spice chapstick, or maple for maple lip balm. Cinnamonand Pumpkin spices are also available as a bundletogether with Peppermint. You can also flavour the easy lip balm recipe with1/4 tsp vanilla extract.

How do you fill a lip balm container?

Now thatour pumpkin spice lip balm recipe is ready, let’s talk about a few tips andtricks how to fill a lip balm container.

  • Usea microwave-safe jug or container with a spout.A spout is very handy to fill narrow lip balm tubes. And if the container ismicrowave safe, you can easily re-melt the lip balm mixture in the microwave ifit gets too cold for pouring.
  • Don’tpour while the lip balm is too hot. A temperature of 130°F / 55°C is perfectfor pouring lip balm. A laser thermometeris useful to check the temperature.
  • Pourslowly. Pouring too fast can create bubbles and air pockets.
  • Don’tpour all the way up. Instead, leave a little room at the top. Pouring lip balminto tubes will often result in sinkholes and having a little leeway allows usto fix that easily.
  • Seta little lip balm mixture aside for later to fix sinkholes.
  • Letthe lip balm cool at room temperature. While it’s tempting to cut the coolingprocess short, the texture of the balm will be better if the lip balm has timeto harden slowly.

How to deal with lip balm sinkholes

Lip balmsinkholes can be an issue when you’re using lip balm tubes but can happen withpots as well. Sinkholes in lip balm are usually a result of the wax beingpoured too hot and/or the wax cooling too quickly.

Here ishow to fix lip balm sinkholes:

  • Firstremember to NOT pour to the top but leave a little wiggle room.
  • Oncethe first pour has set and you see sinkholes, use a hairdryer to warm the topof the lip balm. The surface should look wet and doesn’t have to be fullymelted.
  • Meltthe leftover lip balm mixture in the microwave and pour to cover up thesinkholes.
  • It’sokay to overfill. You can always remove any excess and reuse it again.
