It’s no secret by now that the air fryer is one of my favorite ways to cook chicken!

After making these Air Fryer Chicken Breasts (the juiciest chicken we’ve ever eaten!) and these Air Fryer Chicken Wings, I knew it was time to throw some chicken thighs in there.

Air Fryer Chicken Thighs are so juicy and flavorful, and they cook so quickly that they have become a regular recipe in our rotation.

I like to throw a second batch in the air fryer while we are eating so we have lots of leftovers for quick meals through the week!

How to make Air Fryer Chicken Thighs:

  1. Choose your chicken thighs: see my tips below for boneless or bone in thighs!
  2. Preheat your air fryer: this ensures that your chicken cooks quickly and evenly.
  3. Stir together your seasoning while the air fryer preheats, or choose a favorite spice blend if you’re short on time
  4. Toss chicken with oil and season well — this ensures a crispy, flavorful exterior!
  5. Cook! Some people flip their chicken half way through cooking in the air fryer, but I haven’t ever found a need as my air fryer cooks pretty evenly. You can check yours at the 7 minute mark and adjust as necessary.

Bone in or boneless chicken thighs?

Chicken thighs are inexpensive, delicious and easy to cook. They are made of dark meat, so they are extra juicy!

I used boneless chicken thighs for this recipe, though we love bone in chicken thighs in the air fryer, too!

If you choose bone in chicken thighs, you can use the same seasoning and method, but your cook time will be longer, so be sure to use a meat thermometer to check for doneness.

How do I store leftover chicken?

Store cooked chicken thighs in an air tight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Leftover chicken is great for meal prepping and quick lunches!

Chop up leftover chicken and use it in this classic Chicken Noodle Soup or this Instant Pot Chicken and Dumplings!

Can I reheat chicken thighs in the air fryer?

Yes! Add ¼ water to the bottom of air fryer basket. Place refrigerated chicken in basket and cook for 7-10 minutes at 350 degrees.

We also like to make stir fry, casseroles or creamy pasta dishes with it!

What sides would go well with Air Fryer Chicken Thighs?

The options are almost endless! Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Broccoli Salad – a family favorite
  • Air Fryer Baked Potatoes – so crispy!
  • Crockpot Mac and Cheese (soooo creamy!)
  • Roasted Potatoes and Carrots – made with garlic butter!

The best air fryer chicken thighs I’ve ever made – the key ingredient is the brown sugar, as I have made thighs with just the other seasonings before, but adding the brown sugar is what gives it a crispy carmelization. SO delicious!

FAQs

How long should you cook chicken thighs in an air fryer? ›

Place chicken thighs skin side down in the air fryer basket. Air fry chicken thighs for 16 to 22 minutes at 400 degrees F, flip halfway through. Use a meat thermometer to check for doneness. Let rest for 5 minutes.

How long does it take to cook frozen boneless skinless chicken thighs in the air fryer? ›

Throw some frozen chicken thighs in the air fryer, add lemon pepper seasoning halfway through, and have a delicious meal ready in about 30 minutes!

Do boneless thighs take less time to cook? ›

Boneless, skinless chicken thighs cook quickly, in 15 to 20 minutes, depending on the size. Bone-in thighs, however, take a bit more time, between 25 and 30 minutes. Use a thermometer to measure the internal temperature of the thighs. They're finished cooking when the temperature reads 165°F.

What temperature do you pull boneless chicken thighs? ›

For the ultimate juicy and tender chicken thigh experience, aim for an internal temp between 175 and 185 F. Any temperature higher than that can dry out or burn your meat, but the perfect 175° to 185° range will get you well above the minimum safe temperature and maximize the poultry's flavor potential.

What is the best temperature to cook chicken in an air fryer? ›

After testing a variety of temperatures, I found that 375 degrees F is the best temperature for air frying chicken. Because the air fryer uses convection heat, you do not need to set it as high as you would an oven (in a regular oven, 425 degrees F is best for baking chicken, like Bacon Wrapped Chicken Breast).

Is 30 minutes long enough to cook chicken thighs? ›

Bake in the preheated oven until no longer pink at the bone and juices run clear, about 30 minutes.

Can you cook frozen boneless skinless chicken thighs in the air fryer? ›

Using an air fryer to cook frozen boneless skinless chicken thighs has several advantages. Firstly, it significantly reduces cooking time, as frozen meat often takes longer to prepare. The hot circulating air in the air fryer ensures even cooking and creates a crispy exterior, similar to deep-frying, but with less oil.

Can you cook frozen chicken in an air fryer without thawing? ›

Yes! Preheat your air fryer to 400℉ (200 ℃ ) and then place the frozen chicken in the basket for 10 minutes.

Can you cook boneless skinless chicken thighs from frozen? ›

Arrange chicken thighs in a single layer in a shallow, oven-proof, roasting pan. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 20 minutes if thawed, or 35 minutes if frozen. Remove foil, turn chicken over and cook for 10-20 minutes or until chicken can be easily pierced with fork and internal juices run clear.

How do you know when boneless chicken thighs are done? ›

Boneless, skinless thighs cook quickly. Roast until the chicken has an internal temperature of 165°F, about 20 minutes. If they are not ready, continue roasting and checking the temperature every 5 minutes. Rest the chicken.

How do you know when boneless skinless chicken thighs are done? ›

In our basic meal prep boneless chicken thighs recipe, they take about 25 to 30 minutes baked at 425 degrees F. You'll know the chicken thighs are done when they reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees F.

Is it better to bake boneless chicken thighs at 350 or 400? ›

I recommend baking the chicken thighs at 400 degrees for less time to ensure the chicken thighs stay nice and juicy, vs baking for longer at 350 degrees and running the risk of drying them out.

How long to cook chicken thighs on 400? ›

How Long to Bake Chicken Thighs

  2. Chicken Thighs at 375°F – 45-50 minutes.

How do chefs get chicken so tender? ›

It is very important to marinate chicken whenever you plan to cook with high, direct heat such as grilling or pan searing, as these techniques tend to dry out the meat as it cooks. A marinade is an acidic solution that gets a head start on breaking down the structure of a protein before it is cooked.

Is it better to cook chicken thighs fast or slow? ›

The key is to cook them slowly.

Gentle techniques—such as braising at a relatively low heat and grilling over an indirect fire—work best. The goal is to keep the meat at an internal temp between 140 and 195 degrees—the collagen-breakdown sweet spot—for as long as possible.

How long should you air fry chicken at 375? ›

Place chicken in the air fryer basket, presentation side down, and cook for 8 minutes at 375°F. Flip the chicken over and continue cooking until the thickest part registers 155°F on an instant-read thermometer, typically about 6 to 8 minutes longer.

How long does it take for raw chicken to cook in the air fryer? ›

Air fry: Preheat the air fryer. Place the chicken on the air fryer basket / grate in an even layer, leaving a bit of space for air to circulate around. Air fry the chicken at 415 degrees for 10 minutes. If you have larger pieces of chicken, you'll want to go closer to 13 minutes.

Is it better to bake chicken thighs at 350 or 400? ›
