When it comes to sustainability practices, Hyatt Hotels has been consistent throughout. The Tsim Sha Tsui branch has a Green Committee specifically to lead the sustainability efforts, involving members across all departments. The hotel uses EcoTrack to monitor metrics including greenhouse gas emissions, energy, waste, and recycling. The hotel also uses several green practices particularly centred around waste such as an onsite food waste digester that breaks down organic waste and liquefies it before flushing it down the wastewater line. Hyatt Centric in North Point also uses this waste digester called ORCA.

Most recently, they added Lumitics, a food waste tracker that uses AI image recognition technology. Inside the rooms, the hotels replace single-use plastics with bottled bathroom amenities and partner with SoapCycling to ensure that used bottles and soaps are properly recycled. Glass water bottles take the place of plastic ones. Meanwhile, in Sha Tin, a dedicated filtered water dispenser is available. Similarly, the restaurants use a LightbLue system to track, monitor, and reduce food waste. The Sha Tin hotel is also home to the largest Tesla supercharging station in Asia. In addition, Grand Hyatt Hong Kong collaborates with Zero Foodprint Asia to help regional farmers shift to more climate-friendly practices. Starting with the guest rooms, the hotel has a Waterlogic Silm Water Tap installed to replace single plastic water bottles. It features a high-tech certified UVC water purifier and the in-room glasses are also made from recycled materials. In addition, the low-flow showerheads, faucets, and dual-flush toilets are installed as part of its comprehensive water conservation program. Other features include using illy coffee capsules made from recycled materials, LED lighting, and incorporating toiletries with non-plastic materials such as bamboo.

When it comes to dining, the hotel has a smart hydroponics farm and green wall on the fourth floor complete with a farm-to-table concept to grow microgreens and herbs for the restaurants. The hotel also prioritises locally sourced ingredients to support local farmers, reduce carbon footprint, and use free-range meats and cage-free eggs. It even has a WWF accreditation for using sustainable seafood. The used oyster shells are donated to rebuilt oyster reefs in the northern part of Hong Kong, in partnership with The Nature Conservancy. They also have a zero-waste initiative in collaboration with O Park, the city’s first organic resources centre that turns food waste into biogas and compost for daily food donations to charities.

Its paperless check-in process has saved more than 250,000 pieces of paper from going into landfill each year.

Initiatives such as Christmas trees made from upcycled beer bottles, plastic waste, and socks are donated to those in need. Furthermore, the hotel also recycles oyster shells which are collected and cleaned and then returned to a partner organisation to repurpose into concrete. These new materials become replacements for limestone, which reduces the carbon footprint of building materials. In our opinion, Island Shangri-La sets itself apart when it comes to being family and kid-friendly. This is obvious in its dedicated Family Floor with themed rooms that offer immersive, interactive spaces to stimulate creativity and imagination. Plus, they even provide kids-only cutlery and a section for its buffet at Cafe Too. When it comes to the rooms, the hotel has specially curated amenities for children, such as crib mattresses made of organic cotton, machine washable, and free from harmful substances.

Apart from that, the spaces are thoughtfully designed to provide a learning experience about the local environment, culture, and history. In-room, the hotel also uses filtered water taps to rescue single-use plastics along with water-efficient fittings to minimise water consumption. The use of soap dispensers and stainless steel utensils also reduces the use of single-use plastic. When you’re the hotel that trains the next generation of hospitality experts, it’s only right that you also incorporate sustainable measures for the future. Hotel Icon is definitely stepping up its green practices. Starting this year, they are no longer providing free toiletries in synthetic disposable constraints and free in-room plastic water bottles. Instead, the hotel is introducing a new range of plastic-free alternatives, further elevating its status as a sustainable hotel. In 2018, it became the first hotel to introduce the use of a filtration and Purification Drinking Water System by replacing plastic water bottles. Not to mention the in-room carafes and glassware are all recycled to reduce waste. Staff also wear uniforms that include recycled fabrics from plastic bottles and bamboo.

Inside the rooms, the hotel has also installed in-shower dispensers for shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and hand wash. These dispensers feature products from Apelles, an Australian skincare brand known for its certified organic ingredients, biodegradable packaging, and cruelty-free practices. Other hotels are now using ORCA but Hotel Icon is the pioneer, being the first in the region to implement this technology. Through ORCA, the hotel diverts 285 tonnes of food waste annually from landfills in addition to recycling 135,000 litres of water per year. These efforts result in the reduction of garbage, diesel fuel usage, and carbon dioxide emissions. Also, the water produced is used to humidify the hotel’s more than 8,000 plants on the Green Wall.

Did you know that The Park Lane, known for its rooftop bar, SKYE has its own garden? Unsurprisingly, they use the herbs and vegetables from the rooftop garden to supply the ingredients for their farm-to-table concept in the hotel. In addition, the hotel uses water dispensers in all rooms to eliminate the use of plastic bottles. All in-room light also achieves energy efficiency.

Perhaps the most impressive little detail they have added is the use of paperless check-in through a robot. Guests can pre-register before arriving and receive a QR code which they can use to scan upon arrival. The robot will ‘give’ the keycard and receive the room details via the guests’ chosen method. Upon check-out, the invoice bill will be mailed to the guest and the key card can be given to the robot. The hotel also uses biodegradable products including dental kits, combs, and shaving kits.

The Hari already has quite a reputation for being sustainable. It uses its signature scene for bathroom amenities in refillable pump action bottles while dental kits are made from sustainable bamboo, topped with recycled packaging. This is to cut down on single-use plastic. Furthermore, the hotel is a LEED (Silver), BEAM Plus (Silver), and BEEO-certified hotel, earning sustainable certifications. The hotel also works with NORDAQ, using glass bottles instead of plastic ones, which are filled, capped, sealed, and date-labelled at the hotel. The result? Cutting down the use of 210,000 plastic bottles in 2022.

Like Hyatt Regency in North Point, The Hari also uses ORCA, an innovative food waste solution that mimics a natural digestion process. The food waste at The Hari is turned into an environmentally safe liquid or repurposed by wastewater treatment plants. The hotel’s coffee capsules and coffee grounds are used to transform into farm compost and other upcycling products such as scrubbing soaps or pot plants. Since November 2023, The Hari has been using wooden key cards made from wooden materials from FSC-certified sustainable forests.

The Regent Hong Kong isn’t just glitz and glamour. The reimagined Regent Hong Kong incorporates sustainable design and initiatives to support the Hong Kong Climate Action 2050. It starts with the hotel’s redesign by Chi Wing Lo, who used natural and raw materials such as granite and natural oak. The hotel also uses the IHG Green Engage System to measure and manage its environmental impact. In fact, the hotel has received Platinum Certification from EarthCheck, a leading certification and benchmark programme for the travel and tourism industry. For its reopening, the hotel installed new equipment and systems that optimise energy efficiency such as the controlled automation of LED lighting and temperature for energy saving. The use of its own BMWi7 all-electric limousine transport also helps in carbon footprint reduction.

For waste reduction, the staff’s uniform is made with recycled plastic bottles and Tencel, an eco-friendly fibre made from wood. Moreover, the hotel has an in-house filtered water purification system with recyclable glass bottles. Regent Hong Kong also works with local charities such as FoodLink to repurpose food for those in need. Guests can also enjoy a paperless experience with the use of digital ID cards.

The Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel Hong Kong isn’t just located next to the ocean for nothing. The hotel has incorporated sustainable practices in all levels of business operations. The hotel uses LED light fittings in both the back of the room and plant rooms. The use of Smart Light Control also optimises the use of daylight. Other energy-efficient systems include heating, fan coil units in guestrooms, air handling units, and air filters. To eliminate the use of single-use plastic, the hotel has smart filtered water refill stations called Well井. It uses data, sensors, real-time alerts, and remote monitoring to ensure clean filtered drinking water for consumption.

To top it off, the hotel also makes use of a chilled water supply system and water conservation measures. Water-efficient fittings are part of the basins, sinks, urinals, water closets, showers, and low restrictions to save water. In addition, the hotel also has a local coral conservation and restoration project in partnership with Ocean Park, the first of its kind in the city. The Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel also further plants the seed for sustainability through its Farm Together initiative, which focuses on growing herbs and plants that can be used in restaurants, bringing the farm-to-table concept to life. Cordis’ sustainability practices are quite robust starting with its red panda ambassador, Cody and Coco which highlights the hotel’s commitment to supporting conservation. When it comes to the environment, the hotel implements various recycling initiatives to reduce waste. For their water bottling system, the hotel uses NORDAQ technology, the sustainable water solution from Sweden to prepare and produce their own purified and filtered water on-site. There are also water refill stations throughout the hotel to encourage guests to bring their own bottles. When it comes to the oysters, especially in the buffet, the hotel supports The Nature Conservatory’s Oyster Shell Recycling Proragmme where used oysters are transported to oyster reef restoration sites.

Guests can expect green amenities in the rooms through biodegradable products including dental kits, combs, and shavers. Moreover, the outdoor pool uses temperature management through a water-cooled system and low ozone and carbon impact refrigerants. To support the community, Cordis has a farm-to-table concept in the hotel’s outlets and the culinary team works with local farmers and suppliers to source fresh and homegrown products. In addition, the hotel is committed to minimising food waste and donates safe-to-eat surplus food from their dining outlets to local charities including the Foodlink Foundation and Food Angel who then distribute meals to the community.
